Dougherty County, with Flint River Fresh, Inc. and University of Georgia Cooperative Extension, brings together the brilliant minds of its community to distribute food more equitably and educate residents through the Dougherty Fresh initiative.

Dougherty Fresh will convene a food policy council and expand on the existing work of Flint River Fresh, Inc, which provides urban agriculture programming for community members. The FPC will be established with the purpose of enhancing health, equity, and sustainability by engaging diverse voices and perspective and developing working groups in the five areas - Nutrition Education, Food Access, Urban Agriculture, Entrepreneurship, Food Jobs, & Sustainable Supply Chain. Residents will learn about effective at-home and urban agriculture production techniques and food and lifestyle choices that promote health. Additionally, the collaborative will engage local farmers to expand food production and improve local distribution through a mobile market. Education, community collaboration and hard work are key to this project and will help families receive the quality food they deserve!

Goals:

  • Identify the top two food deserts in Dougherty County
  • Establish weekly mobile markets
  • Increase partnership through the development of a food council
  • Provide access to Dougherty Fresh Freezers
  • Create a replicable model to use in other locations
