Location: Wyandotte County, Kansas, population 163,369
The Problem: Wyandotte County has among the poorest health in the state of Kansas due in part to low levels of physical activity, aggravated by a crumbling infrastructure yielding poor access to our parks and a lack of adequate opportunities for physical activity.
Healthiest Cities & Counties Challenge Approach: The Unified Government of Wyandotte County is focusing on the area between 7th and 18th streets, spanning from the northern to southern edges of Wyandotte County, plus a half mile area around those borders that represents typical walking distance.
According to the 2010 Census, nearly 84,765 people live within this boundary that includes approximately 29 parks.
The goal of this project is to build upon existing initiatives and create a Safe Routes to Parks program, allowing more people to safely access the county’s outdoor spaces and places for physical activity.
